Music at Gardners Lane
At Gardners Lane, we recognise the importance of Music as a Foundation subject which allows children:
- the opportunity to express themselves and develop their creativity and self-confidence.
- to gain understanding of the core elements of music and some of the skills required to make music, alone and with others.
- to gain insights into music from other periods and cultures.
- to make a contribution to the aesthetic life of the school.
- to have fun.
It is our intent that musical experiences made available to the children are memorable and contribute to a life long appreciation of Music. Classroom practice is guided by policies in line with the National Curriculum for Music.
The National Curriculum requires children at Key Stages 1 and 2 to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through:
- performing skills – controlling sounds through singing and playing.
- composing skills – creating and developing musical ideas.
- appraising skills – responding and reviewing.
- Listening, and applying knowledge and understanding.
Entitlement
We aim to ensure that all children have access to a full range of musical experiences during their time with us. We make use of a variety of strategies and approaches to Music and its main elements to meet the needs of both the most and least musically experienced children. Children are offered the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, as well as the chance to join a KS1 and a KS2 Singing Group and to sing and perform at public events. We access Musical opportunities through the use of online Music programmes. Each class has the opportunity to learn Samba Drumming. All children will be given the opportunity to take part in a performance throughout the year.
