About Year 5

Year 5 marks the move for children from lower to upper Key Stage 2. This year is where we provide children with opportunities to gain independence and to seek out, and accept, greater responsibility.

Term 5 and 6

Where in the World?

Years 4 and 5 are travelling to the Amazing Americas

  • What countries are in South and North America?
  • What climate zones and habitats exist?
  • Which cultures can we explore?

Years 4 and 5 will travel across the continents of North and South America discovering about countries, climate zones, earthquakes and rainforests. We will be focusing on a range of literature including myths and fables from different people groups and cultures. In science we will be focusing on living things and their habitats, and in Design and Technology we will be creating our own American burgers and world map jigsaws.

Term 3 and 4

Time Traveller

Looking through the eyes of an evacuee, we will be discussing...

Why and when did war break out? What was the Blitz?  Why were Anderson shelters so important? What was it like to be evacuated? What was rationing?

We will be exploring these questions through our topic lessons, as well as using literature such as The Lion and The Unicorn and Letters from the Lighthouse for our English work.

In design and technology we have already made some model war planes and look forward to cooking with basic rations.

Term 1 and 2

Hocus Pocus

Throughout the autumn term, classes 9, 10 and 11 will be exploring the magic of materials. In science the children will be examining states of matter and the properties of materials. We will be using Ted Hughes’ ‘The Iron Man’ as a basis for our English lessons and a stimulus for our art and design lessons. Who is the Iron Man? Where did he come from? Where will he go? And… what will he do?
