All About Year 4

In Year 4 we continue to build upon the knowledge and skills they have learnt in previous years. The children will be involved with a variety of topic work throughout the year.

Night at the Museum

Anglo-Saxons & Vikings

In Year 4, pupils will be exploring the Anglo Saxons and Vikings.  The term will start with a WOW day, where the children will make various Anglo-Saxon and Viking crafts and explore activities about these topics.

The pupils will gain an understanding of chronology and be able to place these two periods in a chronological framework.  Throughout the term, pupils will investigate key historical events, including the discovery of Sutton Hoo.  In addition, pupils will become archaeologists for a day and undertake an archaeological dig to uncover artefacts.  Exploration and thinking skills will then be used alongside historical evidence to establish their origins and validity.

In English, the Anglo-Saxon poem ‘Beowulf’ will be used to develop poetry techniques, including writing and performing their own Anglo Saxon poem..

In DT the pupils will explore toys from the past whilst having the opportunity to make cam mechanism toys and Viking purses.

Up, Up and Away

Remarkable Rainforests

This term, Year 4 are going up, up and away in a hot air balloon to the rainforests of the world. We will be exploring the rainforest layers, identifying where and why rainforests are under threat and considering the environment in a rainforest.

We will begin by exploring our local environment, before getting on board our balloon and travelling around the world.

In English we will be using Michael Morpurgo’s book, Kensuke’s Kingdom to explore stories from other cultures and persuasive writing. We will use the book as a basis for many discussions and role play activities.

In science we will be exploring solids, liquids and gases and what happens to the particles as materials change state. After this we will use the outdoor area to learn about animals and their habitats.

We will also be designing and making our own kite in design and technology, before exploring different European artists in our art and design unit after half term.

Land of Make Believe

Through the Wardrobe

This term, Year 4 are going ‘through the wardrobe’ to Narnia! We will be thinking about how sound and electricity works there, as it is a very different environment to ours. We will consider how the lamppost is lit at all times and whether the heavy snow effects how far and easily sound can travel through the magical land. We hope we don’t make too much noise – we don’t want the Ice Queen to hear us!

In English we will be using C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to stimulate story writing, advertisements, play scripts and information texts. We will use the book as a basis for many discussions and role play activities.

We will be drawing portraits of the Ice Queen in art before half term, and after half term are looking forward to making battery operated lights.
